"Spirited Legacy" was written for the Watertown High School Jazz Ensemble in memory of Tom Heninger, who had been the longtime band director there before his tragic passing in 2022. The piece opens and closes with contemplative, nostalgic sections with a "spirited" section in the middle. During the opening section there is a written solo for trumpet (Tom's old instrument), and there is a fairly lengthy improvised tenor saxophone solo later in the piece. This solo could be given to any other instrument, but it works nicely on tenor.
